The importance of Sports in a child's life

Last week I took a group of 40 keen cricketers to a competition at Rosebank Road. We had a great day, with parents and children enjoying the outing. I was really impressed with all the children's' behavior and their sense of team work. Each team had a go, and even though we didn't win the cup, all of the children got something out of the day. This got me thinking about the role sport plays in our children's lives. Often taking children from one practice to the next becomes a hassle and the last thing we want to do early in the morning or after work, however, below are just some of benefits I thought of, when it comes to children playing sports.

Becoming Achievement Oriented
Kids involved in sports (whether at individual level or team level) learn that there is a goal to reach.

Accountability
Accountability towards themselves and their team rnates. They have to play their part towards a common goal.

Just Because Life Isn't Fair, Doesn't Mean You Quit
Often failure can destroy a child, however it is the children that can get up and brush themselves off after a loss, that show their character. Enjoy the learning around failure with your child, as this will come in handy later in life.

Setting Short and Long-Term Goals
This is so important, and allows your child to strive for something, They have to work hard to reach their goals, but that builds their character and makes the getting there that much more satisfying. Learning how to set meaningful, attainable goals is valuable in school, at work and in so much of what we do.

Repetition
They say practice makes perfect. This is TRUE. Children have to practice if they are going to get good at something. This is true in sports and when transferred, true in all areas of our life. We're not always really good at everything we try in life, and teaching your children this is a very important lesson. PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!

Character
Courage, grit, honesty, self-discipline, determination and delayed gratification are the ingredients of a good athlete, and that mix is exactly what defines strong character.

Perseverance (One of our School Values)
One of the best things that children can learn through sports is perseverance. Nobody ever got good at sports by quitting.
